Community Read 2023-2024: Hadha Baladuna

UM-Dearborn's 2023-2024 Community Read is Hadha Baladuna: Arab American Narratives of Boundary and Belonging, edited by Ghassan Zeineddine, Nabeel Abraham, and Sally Howell. The book was selected by the Faculty Senate's First Year Experience Committee.

Hadha Baladuna (“this is our country”) is a collection of creative nonfiction centered on the Arab American community in Metro Detroit, with many selections set right in Dearborn. This book is a particularly meaningful selection for our Community Read program because of its many connections to our campus, through the Dearborn community, through editors Ghassan Zeineddine and Sally Howell, and through the number of UM-Dearborn alums among its contributors, including authors Teri Bazzi, Yasmin Mohamed, Mai Jakubowski, and Hanan Ali Nasser. The book includes themes connected to identity, community, immigration, coming-of-age, place and urban environment, and the power of storytelling.
