Government Data

General guide for finding and accessing government data

Using Government Websites to Find Data

When looking for government data, begin with official government websites. Below are some key government data sites, but this is not an exhaustive list. Depending on your specific research needs, you may want to begin your search on the relevant agency's website. For example, if you are looking for data on agriculture, check the USDA's website. Most federal agency websites will have a data portal of some kind.

Government Websites with Data

Data.gov: The open data repository for the US government. Includes data from both federal agencies and state, city, and county government organizations. Search by keyword or filter by organization. See the User Guide for help navigating through the site.

Census Data: The official government website for the US Census Bureau data. The data explorer tool allows you to create customized tables and maps. Data includes the Decennial Censuses and the American Community Surveys.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics: A division of the US Department of Labor. Their website collects, calculates, and published data related to labor. Use the Data Tools tab to find data.
