Searching for Books

Tips for finding books:

Use the topics list from your assignment (or from your proposed topic) and use that in both keyword and subject searches.

I found a book. How do I find more?

Check the book's library catalog record for subject(s). Clicking on the subject link(s) should give a list of other, older, related book titles.
Once you have found a book, look through its references list. You should be be able to find citations to other older books.
Search the library's catalog for more books by the same author(s). The author(s) may have written more books on the same, or similar, topic.

Where to Find Books

Search the library catalog
Find books in the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Mardigian Library.
Search the UM-Ann Arbor and UM-Flint catalog
There are two ways to get books from UM-Ann Arbor and UM-Flint libraries:
1. Click the "Get this" button in the UM-Ann Arbor/Flint catalog entry, then choose "UM-Dearborn Mardigian Library" to have the book sent to the Mardigian Library for pick up.
2. UM-Dearborn students, faculty, and staff can use their MCard to check out books from the Thompson Library at UM-Flint as well as most UM-Ann Arbor libraries — after registering at the library's circulation desk.
Search MeLCat
The Michigan Electronic Library (MeL) includes materials from libraries throughout Michigan, but not UM-Ann Arbor. You request the book and it is delivered to the Mardigian Library (usually in 3 to 5 days).
Visit Other Libraries
The Mardigian Library has agreements with several college and university libraries in the Detroit area where you can go to check out books. If any of these are convenient to you, you might get the book you want faster by visiting that library.

eBooks
The library also has access to hundreds of thousands of online books. Check, especially, Ebook Central, eBook Collection on EBSCOhost, National Academies Press, ScienceDirect, Springer e-Books (books published by Academic Press or Elsevier), and Wiley e-Books. If the publisher of the book you are looking for is Academic Press, Elsevier, Springer, or Wiley and you don't see the book in the library catalog, click on the appropriate link above to see if it is in the publisher's database (the library's catalog isn't always up to date for these).
