Formatting Your Thesis or Dissertation with Microsoft Word

The video tutorials in this guide may be used to format your thesis or dissertation even though the titles refer only to the thesis.

Front matter lists

Several lists may be added to the front matter of the thesis or dissertation and what is added depends on your particular thesis or dissertation. All of these pages must have page numbers and, generally, these lists appear in the following order:

  • Table of Contents — A Table of Contents is required.
  • List of TablesRequired if you have more than one table in your thesis or dissertaton.
  • List of Figures — Required if you have more than one figure in your thesis or dissertation.
  • List of AbbreviationsOptional, but highly encouraged if you use more than a couple of abbreviations in your thesis or dissertation (plus Word makes it pretty easy to create this list).

Click on the links above or on the menu on the left side to see the pages with video tutorials demonstrating how to create each list.
