Putting Together Your Citations & Formatting Your Paper

Citations provide the information necessary for readers to identify and retrieve each source you use. When you use someone else's words or ideas in your papers, you should create In-text citations (within the paper) and References list citations (at the end of the paper). Each In-text citation or footnote should lead to a References list citation, and each References list citation should come from an In-text citation or footnote.

Common citation styles used in research papers include MLA Style and APA Style.

MLA Style (used in the Humanities and some Social Sciences)

APA Style (used in the Physical and Behavioral Sciences, some Social Sciences, and Business)
