STAT 263: Introduction to Statistics

Project B "Mean Age of Library Books"

Finding books

How to create a list of all the Q resources

  1. Go to the Catalog
  2. Click the Other tab (all the way to the right)
  3. Click the radio button for Search by Library of Congress (LC) Call Number
  4. Enter "Q" in the search box
  5. Press Submit
You should see a list of all the Library's resources with a call number beginning with Q. This current list includes books, ebooks, and websites.

To limit to only physical books:
  1. Click the Limit/Sort Search button (in the middle of the screen, above the results)
  2. Click Book
  3. Click Submit
You should see only books now.

Finding the copyright date in the catalog

  1. Find the item record for the item indicated by your random number generator. (you can find a search box to look up a particular record number at the bottom of your results list)
  2.  Click the MARC Display button

       3. Locate the copyright date in the 260 field under deliminator "c". Often the copyright date will appear as the final part of the call number. However, these are not as accurate because it may actually be the release date instead of the copyright date or you may find new editions under the same call number as an older edition.
