Composition Faculty Guide

A guide for faculty in the Composition discipline about requesting research instruction and using library services.

How to contact your librarian

Your librarian for Composition: Anne Dempsey Moussa

Email: ademp@umich.edu

Schedule a meeting with me: https://appt.link/meet-with-anne-dempsey

See me in-person: My office is located in the Library Research Center on the first floor of the Mardigian Library

I'm on campus 3 days a week (currently Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) and working remotely for the other two, but am always available for meetings & consultations by Zoom/Google Meet, or via email.

If you need general library assistance, you can also contact the Mardigian Library at ask-the-mardigian@umich.edu or at library.umd.umich.edu/ask

What can we do for you?

  • Teach students research skills

We're here to help your students build strong research skills, find and use resources, and think critically about information. We can work with both in-person and online classes, in any fashion that meets the needs of your course. Common points of collaboration include:

  • Visiting your classroom to teach research skills designed around your assignments
  • Meeting with students to provide specific research advice and assistance
  • Creating instructional materials tailored to your class, such as worksheets, videos, or research guides
  • Embedding me in your Canvas courses to answer questions and follow assignment progress
  • Collaborating on research assignment development
  • Facilitating sessions on information literacy topics such as responsible AI use, evaluating sources, or citation management

Plus much more! If you have an idea for something different or have needs that extend beyond this list, please get in contact with your librarian!

  • Suggest materials to purchase for the library

Contact your librarian or Alicia Schaeffer with your recommendations for books or other materials to add to the collection! Books are added to the library to support your courses and research whenever possible!

  • Place materials on course reserve

Course reserves are high-demand library materials—typically books you assign in your courses—that we place on hold behind the front Info Desk. Check out periods are set for shorter periods of time that typical loan periods so that a greater number of students are able to access the material. Course reserves can be created by filling out the Faculty Course Support Form.
