Week 1 - Defining the Holocaust

Week 1 includes several resources that define broadly what the Holocaust and genocide are.

If you wanted to then go further and locate more introductory materials on this or any topic you have several options.

If you want to find books you can refer to the library catalog and search for things by keyword, subject, and author most typically.  This is a subject search for the Holocaust in the UMD library catalog.  There are many options here that will define the Holocaust.  Also, you can search the free Internet.  However, it is key when searching the Internet to throughly evaluate what you are finding.  You do not want to ever rely on bogus web sites.  Refer to the Using the Free Internet tab above for information on evaluating Internet materials.  Apply that evaluative criteria to the web sites your professor has provided for Week 1 and you will see they pass the evaluative criteria.  If you apply these evaluative criteria to every web site you locate on the Internet you will be more likely to then be using credible and reliable materials.

Here are some credible web sites that define or discuss the Holocaust and genocide and pass the evaluative criteria:

The Holocaust Memorial Center

Yad Vashem

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum - Introduction to the Holocaust and definition of genocide.

The Encyclopedia Britannica - Encyclopedias on the Internet are also good ways to locate introductory material on multiple topics.  So, if you know of a good encyclopedia it can be a starting point for you on any topic you need introductory information on.  Encyclopedia Britannica has been around for over 100 years and has a fine track record of quality well researched information.  Their Internet presence is the continuation of that 100 year track record.  We can then also find information on genocide here as well.
